Throughout the tour, The Malombo Jazz Makers had to be on their guard. Constantly, the security services were watching The Jazz Makers. By 1971, The Malombo Jazz Makers toured South Africa with African Follies’ stage and variety show. Especially for anyone involved in the Anti Apartheid movement. This included Peter Magubane, The Malombo Jazz Makers’ manager. During the tour, he introduced The Malombo Jazz Makers to Steve Biko, Saths Cooper and Strini Moodley.

But also we, as New Life, lost the property on Samora Machel Avenue. The organization we had separated from, which had been our covering, sued us for the building and had us evicted from the property. As a church, we could have counter-sued the organization, but God spoke clearly to us that we should "sow the building, in order to reap the city". And so Chichi and I did not fight the eviction, and our church essentially became homeless.

Only them was Julian Bahula able to return from exile. They were founder members of the Black Consciousness Movement and played an important part in the South African Student Organisation. Steve Biko invited The Malombo Jazz Makers to become part of a musical cultural production, Into the Heart of Negritude. This offer was accepted, and The Malombo Jazz Makers embarked upon the riskiest tour of their career. When the sixties became the seventies, The Malombo Jazz Makers were South Africa’s most popular jazz bands. Just like so many musicians before them, they were being exploited.

Jabula were a London-based Afro-jazz/funk collective comprised mostly of South African and Ghanaian musicians. The band released five albums between 1975 and 1982. Star saxist Dudu Pukwana played on the first two albums, which were issued on the Caroline-subsidiary of Virgin.

You can choose to hike the Jatbula Trail in either 5 days/4 nights or 6 days/5 nights. I mean, since you’ve been hiking (or will be starting to hike), you won’t have much on you and there’s heaps of traffic going between the two locations. Hiking as part of a tour group is a very popular way of walking the track. After that, you select each campsite and how many people will stay at that camp each night.

It’s best to also carry your own emergency device like a Personal Location Beacon (PLB). There are emergency satellite phones placed out on the trail at every campsite. These Emergency Call Devices are only allowed to be used in emergencies and connect you with a ranger to discuss what to do in the situation. The only other real danger out on the trail is the heat. Heat exhaustion, dehydration and heat stroke are all real risks when you do the Jatbula Trail. While you can’t escape the heat, there are some things you can do to prevent being affected.

Straight away, he started trying to secure work permits for the other two members of The Malombo Jazz Makers. They were under constant scrutiny, having to change addresses constantly to stay one step ahead of the police. Eventually, Julian was able to send a work permit and plane ticked to Lucas ‘Lucky’ Ranku. He never told a soul, and escaped from South Africa.

Most day hikers leave by 2.00 – 3.00 pm though, and then after that, you’ll be back to the small group of 15. After a few hours on the trail, you’ll approach Crystal Falls. There is a large main camping area, but if you keep walking there are a few more secluded spots as well. The first 4 km is flat, easy walking and leads you to Northern Rockhole.

The trail is named after Jawoyn Traditional Owner, Peter Jatbula, who was instrumental in securing land rights for the Jawoyn people. The hike follows the western edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment over sandstone plateau and through woodlands, open forest, monsoon forest and riverine landscapes. From Sweetwater Pool, it’s a very short 4.5 km to the finish!

His time as a political activist, and then in exile cost Julian Bahula. Julian was forced to flea South Africa, and until Apartheid was defeated, he was unable to return home. A mixture of South African and British musicians took to the stage.

The 10K team gave us a number of deliverables that we as NLCC had to meet. Fast forward to the end of 2011 when I made the decision to reformat the team that had been in charge of the Jabula 10K project. We placed Pastor Parkvoo Mutendera in charge of the entire project, with the mission of getting the project back on track. It was in 2012 that new impetus was created with the news that the Jabula 10K project was moving forward fast. We then christened a new name for the project, "Kingdom Cathedral."

London had been home to a number of South African musicians over the year. Julian and Lucas were just the latest to call London home, whilst in exile.

However, he decided to form a vocal group The Lullaby Landers. It was around 1959, when Julian Bahula’s family were forced to move from Eesterust, a township a few miles west of Mamelodi. Their new home was Mamelodi, a township, to the north east of Pretoria. For the young Julian Bahula this could’ve been a turbulent time in his life.

They became the focal point for the African National Congress, as they set about raising awareness of apartheid in South Africa. Before long, Jabula were a popular band, who were attracting a lot of attention. They were a talented band, but they didn’t want to get involved in the anti apartheid movement. Julian wanted to use Hawk as a platform to tell people about what was going on in South Africa.

They had been busy since they recorded their debut album. What with touring and recording radio sessions for SABC, the state broadcaster. However, the most important date in 1967, was the release of their sophomore album Malombo Jazz Makers Volume 2. Originally, The Malombo Jazz Men were set to make their debut at the Soweto Cold Castle Jazz festival. They were determined to tighten and hone their sound.
